PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Conti helped the Town of Rehoboth convert their town-owned landfill to an efficient solar energy facility generating significant revenue for them.

After the home-rule petition was passed by the Massachusetts Legislature and signed into law, allowing the Town of Rehoboth to collect and reallocate funds generated from local solar farms to the town’s capital improvements, Rehoboth representatives contracted Conti to design and build a solar farm on the Rehoboth Landfill. The solar plant helps town and state officials capitalize on the new legislation to raise funds for badly needed community infrastructure upgrades, including repairs to the Town Hall and police station.

Conti designed, engineered, procured and installed the 2.4 MW solar array on the landfill near an operational transfer station. With slopes of varying degrees and topping out at 13%, the topography of the Rehoboth landfill posed significant challenges. Conti worked with the landscape by developing project designs early on and redesigning when necessary. Conti also used an innovative Game Change racking system which allowed the team to attach solar panels to the landfill without penetrating it by using concrete blocks over posts.

Working closely with project stakeholders, local vendors and subcontractors, the team was able to complete the project on budget and on schedule in just three months with minimal rework and redesign needed. Once completed, Conti connected the new energy system directly to National Grid’s distribution system.

The team received the Best Project Award of Merit for outstanding performance in the Energy/Industry category from Engineering News-Record.
